This was the first Palace Theatre production that was signed using British Sign Language. Contributor Robert Hale says that many deaf people came to see it, as the play had been presented in the West End with its original American Sign Language. Lead actress Jean St Clair was profoundly deaf. In 1988, British Telecom began sponsoring signed performances at the Palace.Productions by decade

The first production of Children of a Lesser God in British Sign Language with a profoundly deaf actor Jean St Clair in the lead role and Robert Hale playing the teacher. Directed by Eric Standidge. Many deaf people came to see it, as they had had to rely on a stage side translator when the west end production had been staged – as it was in American Sign language.
Belated thanks, Robert, for your comment. Two years later, in 1988, British Telecom began sponsoring signed performances at the Palace Theatre.
